It’s Fun Being a Worm

The title is a quote from Ben while he was playing in the newspaper we were shredding for the red wrigglers. Another quote, “I’m a cwazy worm.” After shredding paper we harvested the compost from one bin. It took a lot longer than I anticipated, but we got it all done and it felt good. It’s been on the to-do list for a while. Zach was a huge help.

We got the old bin restarted and a brand new one going for a total of three bins. My goal is to have enough worms to consume all of our winter compost. We came up with a new project too. Zach is going to chart how much kitchen waste we put in the bins (by weight). We weighed the worms, too, and we’ll weigh them again at next harvest to see how much they’ve multiplied by weight.

Where did you get your first batch of worms? I’ve been trying to get some, but having no luck. The Wriggler Ranch that used to operate at the Brady Landfill isn’t returning emails. Did you get yours there?

Yep. Got mine from Wriggler Ranch. But if I remember right it took me a while to get in contact with her. Finally did by phone just before a farmers’ market in the exchange. She was going to be there and brought the worms there for me. I could possibly send a pound back with Graeme after Christmas…. as long as he thinks he can keep them from freezing (he’s driving). But it might be tricky catching up with him to pick them up……
