I’ve never played Settlers……

….. but I like this story.  And I want to get a copy of the game.  Graeme has played, I have observed, and I think it looks like a fun game.  I like the story of how Teuber, the game’s inventor, tinkered with it for four years, testing it out on his wife and children.  [...]

Favourite Sayings

These are a few of the expressions that Noah favours these days:
“Yay for my life.”  (Also, “Yay for my popcorn life”, “Yay for my puppy’s life”, etc. etc.)
“Just ignore me.”
“I can’t do [ x ], I’m too young.”
And because his Ts are pronounced with Ks he calls Charlotte “Charlick”.
Unfortunately, high pitched screaming remains a favourite, [...]

Polymer Gel

Iris, this one’s for you. Going back a while, I posted about a polymer gel the kids made at a university chemistry thingy. The recipe was requested and at last, here it is (PDF).

Our Names

Somehow, at lunch today, the question was posed to Noah, “What is Daddy’s name?” He thought and looked up in the corner of his eye trying to “see” it in his mind. Zach gave him a hint, “Graaaaae….” Noah was quick to complete it as, “Grae of the Rings”. Everyone [...]

Fossil Hunt

Yesterday, we returned to a fossil quarry that we visited last year.  Everyone had a good time.  (I speak for everyone, but I’m pretty sure they’d agree.)  Although it wasn’t bright, sun-shiny, it was a lovely day.   I was pleased with how selective the boys were this year about which fossils to bring home.  I’m [...]

What makes a nine year old’s summer complete?

Zach had heard there were stick insects in the area.  He saw in a field guide that we were within their range, and then spoke to several locals who have seen them. Zach has eagerly anticipated finding some, or at least one, and recently lamented that summer is almost over and he has not seen [...]

*sniff sniff* “I smell snow”

“Noah, look!  It snowed! ” I could hear Ben from my bed this morning.
Then Noah, “Ohhhh….. snowwwww!  It’s beaugiful!” (beautiful)
Not too long after we were all up the phone rang.  It was Graeme.  “Put Zach on the phone.  I need to tell him he was right.”
Last night Graeme took the two big boys out to [...]

Wanted: Chicken Pox

Yesterday morning I informed the boys that we likely weren’t exposed to chicken pox in a recent attempt to be.  I had just found out that our little friend still hadn’t broken out in spots.  Zach surprised me by groaning, “Awwww….”   I said, “What? Are you really disappointed?”  He said he’d rather get it than [...]

quick

Here’s a very quick update before eating supper.  Computer is back in the shop….. Graeme took it. Sounds like they are going to put our old RAM back in, do a clean install (which is what we suggested in the first place except our own discs are in storage up north), and refund us our [...]
